Food for thought!

Today’s food for thought!

My mind today is busy thinking about these two views running in my mind:-

“We learn more from criticisms than praises”

“Criticism kills creativity”

I feel that both are true.

What do you think about it?

I think that we often learn from the harder knocks and lessons in life, and that happier moments seem to be more brief and shortlived. The thing about criticism though, is that a lot of its value depends on 1) who's giving the criticism (and what their motivation is) and 2) how you take it. I always try to take only what I find helpful to me and ignore the rest.

Thanks Verity!
You have made things very clear...its not all black and white but there is a lot grey out there as well...
I like the way you look at Criticism..

I don't like criticism, unless it's constructive criticism. I think we remember criticism far longer than we remember praise, simply because the criticism hurts. Praise is better, because it encourages people to feel better, to want to do better, to try harder. Positive energy always outweighs negative energy. Giving voice to negative words gives them power, so I try to avoid negativity and negative people.

Both may be true. We certainly learn by trying new things.

hi abhay,,i think the timing is important!when we expact praise then criticsm only hurts and we can't learn,,and vice-versa.
the other thing is "who" is doing the criticism / praise..it matters a lot.. we can learn a gr8 lesson or we can simply ignore..
more on that later..

doesn't the greek root of criticism mean discernment? What I absolutely believe, is that all depends upon the person, if he or she refuses to accept criticism or praise, nothing much can be done.. No one was more discouraged than van gogh, voltaire or da vinci, but as they reefused to let it touch their work....they turned out just fine. Also, it is a matter of self esteem... If one is secure, then nothing can kill creativity, on the other hand if a person suffers from a smidgeon of doubt, even an allusion to hairstyle (or soemthing equally trivial) may stop an artist on his or her tracks. See the unimportance of both...

hi, i hope u know me..
well i think that both the statements r true.for me criticism is just someone others opinion.so i take criticism in that sense.some take it negatively and some positively so it all depends upon how one feels about it.i try to take it positively.
my mom is a natural criticiser and my dad is a natural praiser so i like when my mom seldomly praises.
i have read many of ur poems.
i really liked the poem abt earth.
v nice thoughts.

well,it's been quite a uproar as i saw people making it.for me out of the 2 only one can b true bcoz accepting both means contradicting the very basic idea of our thought.what i feel is that 2nd statement can't b true,criticism shapes creativity,it helps in bringing the the non idea in to idea.more importantly it leads us 2 new ventures which is otherwise bcoz of our preoccupation is hidden or unexplored to b precise.

nindak neerhe rakhiye, aangan kuti chabai
Kabir

means: keep the criticiser, close to you...infact make his house in your front yard

What do I think? I think that criticism must be given carefully and with some honey on the spoon. Then it's easier to learn.

Sometimes we just need to suspend all judgement and dance.

What do I think? I think you criticise a policy rather than an individual, and agree with gary that it must be given carefully given with some honey on the spoon.

best wishes

Hi Everybody!
Let me welcome the newcomers to I&U
first...
Hi Purvi,
Your view that a criticism is just another opinion so is praise and it all depends on the person how he takes it. There lies the subjectivity. How a person takes an opinion depends on many factors such as from whom is it coming, whats are his intention, is it constructive and a lot many...
Thank you so much for visiting me...and commenting...I appreciate your opinion.

@aditinandan,
Welcome to I&U,
Criticism definitely shapes creativity but constructive criticism and depends on the source of criticism. For example if a new poet's work is criticized by a Nobel laureate...them criticism itself is an honour irrespective of the content...I hope you understand my point...
Thank you so much for visiting me and your comment...

@Raj,
Welcome to I&U,
hi, I agree with you to have Nindak in my neighborhood but I want Kabir himself to be there...so a Nindak can not be any one as being a Nindak also needs qualifications...

@Rachana,
Hi I completely agree with you though I am always open to criticism if its constructive and from the qualified critic.Thank you.

@Sanxukta,
Hi,
I think its not easy to ignore the wild criticisms of the qualified Nindak(Critic) who have evil intentions while criticising your work and the criticisms of unqualified critics.A critic can only add value to your work but this critic is rarely found in this universe.
Thank you, I love reading your comments.

@Vasanta,
Hi,
I could not agree with you more!
Thank you so much for contributing...

Hi Gary and Lindsay,
